Where do Models go Wrong? Parameter-Space Saliency Maps for Explainability

Roman Levin, Manli Shu, Eitan Borgnia, Furong Huang, Micah Goldblum, Tom Goldstein

The authors try to understand the network parameters, and come up with a parameter saliency map. This map reveals the network component which malfunctions, and thus pruning it, would improve the model behavior. The proposed method to map the parameter saliency is to use the gradient information of the loss function as a measure of parameter sensitivity and optimality of thr measure at a give point in image space. The parameter saliency profile allows us to identify filters that are most responsible for mistakes and erroneous network behavior. The authors create a framework for identifying the particular filters that cause incorrect predictions and examining the relationships between these filters and images. This approach results in a comprehensible and intuitive knowledge of model behavior.

Interests

Apart from being a researcher, I enjoy playing badminton and I do passionate about photography. Also spend my time with my friends.

When forced indoors, I follow a number of sci-fi, feel-good genre and highly appreciated movies and television shows, I do love to cook, and I spend a large amount of my free time exploring the latest advancements in biometric systems.
